THE SCHOOL OF THE SPIRIT

The more you get to know the Lord, the more effortlessly you’re drawn to Him

Father, we praise You. You are worthy of all our worship and glory. We thank You for Your unfailing love, grace, and mercy. Thank You for the honor of standing in Your presence and speaking in Your name. Holy Spirit, we welcome You. Breathe Your life into us this morning. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”

I want to talk to you this morning about the School of the Spirit. I know this school. In fact, I’m a student in this school. And if you’re hungry for growth or frustrated with stagnation, you should pay attention.

For some reason, the more you get to know the Lord, the more effortlessly you love Him. Let me say that again: The more you get to know the Lord, the more effortlessly you love Him.

Now, I know ‘love’ can be a big, intimidating word—especially for some of us. When we hear ‘love,’ we think,” No, I’ve failed at my definition of love so many times. I’m not sure I’m capable of loving”. So, when we start talking about love, you might wonder, where is this going? Maybe we can phrase it differently for those who find the word intimidating: The more you get to know the Lord, the more effortlessly you’re drawn to Him. The more you know Him, the more you want to know. Does that happen to you?.

The more you know, the more you realize, I don’t know enough. So the more you’re drawn to seek more, to know more. And the more effortlessly you love Him—whichever definition you prefer—the more you’re compelled to reflect Him. It’s purely organic. The more you’re drawn to His character, His attitude toward life, His wisdom, His calmness, His confidence, His effortlessness, His compassion

There is a significant difference between “knowing about God” and “knowing Him”. This difference is bridged by relationship and revelation. Relationship opens the door to knowing God, while revelation leads to a more consistent understanding and experience of Him.  As you invest in relationship and receive revelation, this gap closes, leading to personal experience of what you previously only knew about.

The more you are triggered to reflect God, the less of your old self you will reflect naturally, a process known as death to self. This death to self involves shedding old ways, ambitions, habits, hobbies, associations, and friends—anything that defined your former identity.

This process is not an event but manifests as internal conflict, where once-comfortable things become uncomfortable, signalling that the Holy Spirit has begun His inside work in you.

This internal conflict will escalate to a point where you must make a decision. This difficult decision is either to hold on to what you know or to trust the Lord despite limited information about the future. The answer to the question of ‘what will I have?’ when leaving everything is, ‘You’ll have me‘. When you reach the point of deciding to surrender, that’s when relationship and revelation truly begin, and growth starts unveiling consistently.

This surrender marks the point of admission into the school of the Spirit. surrender is the point where believers become disciples, as a disciple makes a conscious and very difficult decision to follow Christ—to leave all and follow Christ.

This decision grants the Spirit of God  “license” to continue His work in you, essentially a “do not resuscitate” order for the old self, allowing Him to remove anything not in His likeness. Having made the decision to go forward with the Lord consider yourself enrolled in the school of the spirit.

DISCIPLESHIP

Discipleship is primarily about being called to be with him first. Your sending is not guaranteed; it depends on how you perform in the School of the Spirit.

Enrolling in this school means signing up, and upon enrollment, you have to pay school fees. These fees are paid in three currencies:

Obedience is defined as the time between knowing what you need to do and actually doing it

OBEDIENCE: This is how internal conflict is resolved. Obedience is defined as the time between knowing what you need to do and actually doing it. When struggling with obedience, you must be honest and ask for help. The help needed to build obedience is grace, which is overcoming power or enduring power. You can boldly approach the throne of grace to obtain mercy and help in your time of need, especially when lacking the currency of obedience. (Hebrews 4:16) So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

FOCUSED ATTENTION: This is crucial in the School of the Spirit. Attention is your ability to notice and process something, and focus is your ability to sustain attention on that thing. When engaging with the written word, you cannot be a passive reader; you must study with an intent to find. Your attention will yield revelation and insight. It’s important to sustain the ability to look and recognize while studying the scriptures. The first and most important place to learn to see is the scriptures, and the second most important place is within you.

MEDITATION: I am not referring to new age practices where you sit on floor and hum your way into delusion.NO! Think of meditation in this light you digest information from the bible the same way a cow chews the cud. Meditation is taking the same material and cycling it through the chambers of your mind and speech patterns till is becomes a default setting in you.  This is the third currency. When you encounter a question during study.

“sit with the question, write down every possible answer that comes to mind”

Don’t be too quick to ask Google, a pastor or Bible teacher. Instead, sit with that question and apply your mind to it, writing down every possible answer that comes to mind. This process helps open the door of revelation. When you struggle with this, you ask for wisdom, understanding, and revelation from the primary instructor, the Spirit of Christ Himself. (Galatians 1:15-19) But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia.

Other sources of help should be used for confirmation, enhancement, and depth, not as a first point of call.

(Galatians 2:2) I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.

BEWARE OF STAGNATION:-

Stagnation on this journey is a real risk, marked by:

1- Being caught in an endless loop of school. (2 Timothy 3:7) always learning but never able to come to a knowledge( personal and intimate experience) of the truth.

The School of the Spirit is meant to be episodic, not a lifelong career of studying without action. From time to time you will be tasked to return for re-equipping. Just as it in the world one will be required to return to school for, Continuing Education, Up-skilling, Re-skilling or professional Development (Structured learning) to advance in one’s field.

“ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of truth”

The return to school involves earning authority and skill for application in life. We are not meant to be in school for eternity. Likewise in the school of the spirit we are not be in class endlessly. (2 Timothy 3:7)

2- Internal conflict that is never resolved. always wavering between contradicting desires. attempting the impossible task of trying to balance faith with worldly desires.  (James 1:6) for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides].

3- No impact of meaningful change in prayer and word experience. This the c organic result of the above condition (James 4:3 AMP)

WHAT DOES PROGRESS IN THE SCHOOL OF THE SPIRIT LOOK LIKE?.

The first signs of progress in this school are all internal, such as a sense of peace, contentment, a love for the Word and presence, and increased self-control. It is what you have on the inside that you communicate. There will be an ever increasing outflow spiritual responses that  cannot be bought or faked.

(Galatians 5:22-25).  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS ,AND EXAMS THE GATEWAY TO GRADUATION

On your journey to graduation in this school, you will have assignments and tests, sometimes even difficult exams. These tests are guaranteed; you must be tested. You cannot skip assignments. Do your assignments and face your tests with confidence, knowing that your victory is already guaranteed.  Look whether you are enrolled in the school of the spirit or not this world will constantly send tests trails and exams your way.

(John 16:33) I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Being in school helps you to be prepared. You are fully fortified with the Word, the Spirit of Christ, and His Name; the Spirit is actively helping you during tests by supplying counsel, understanding, and guidance. (James 1: 2-4)My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

When tests come (and they will), you’ll stand firm. I’ve seen it in my life—accidents, crises—yet peace prevailed because I knew Him.

GRADUATION

Graduating from a level in this school means becoming field-ready. Signs of being field-ready include:

  • Having a truth-based response to most situations in your life.
  • Being more inclined to make disciples and help others walk the same journey you’ve walked. (2 Timothy 4:2).

The learning objective of this school is to know Christ. To know Christ is to know the Father. (John 17:3). And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

The primary book of study in the school of the Spirit is the Bible, which should be studied with the  intent to find. When studying, it’s important to sustain this ability to look and recognize. This is why you can read the same book multiple times and find different things each time, because you are actively looking for different things as the Lord instructs and guides you.  Your primary instructor is the Spirit of Christ Himself.

(John 16:12) “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.  All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Stretch yourself beyond current limits, depth comes from effort. We cannot achieve the desired spiritual outcomes without the process and the price of these three currencies. For the month of July  engage with the scriptures with the intent to know God in a new way, allowing the scriptures to speak in unprecedented dimensions.
